How Does Job Costing Work?
Back
1) For an example, the Workdesk screen below shows how an employees punches in a job code while going to lunch. The Job Code, Maintenance , is not his normal Job class of Electrician. The Job Code can be punched in or prox cards can be used to identify specific jobs

Note the hours produced for each day and Job Class is recorded in the Time Sheets. When a Job change is detected, the previous Job is considered halted. Hours from there on in will be recorded for the new job code unless a new job code is detected. The system can also be configured that if no prox card representing a job is swiped or a job code entered, the employee's standard job will be reinstated.

2) Employee can use the clock/reader to designate a job change.

3) Employee is scheduled to work a different job and is automatically assigned it.

The key to job costing is allocating employee hours among different cost categories. These categories may represent job classes, project work orders, cost locations with each being assigned an additional cost center and account code. Note the example below is the Job Class table which uses a combined Job Class and Project Id combination. QUE Accounting provides an after the fact Job Costing module which includes additional input for cost items other than labor.
